After almost 2 years of preparation by Dr. Tham Hoang (Conference Chair/Organizing Committee) and Dr. Gary Rand (Organizing Committee) from the Ecotoxicology and Risk Assessment Laboratory at the Biscayne Bay campus, the First International Conference on Environmental Pollution, Restoration and Management took place in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam (March 1-5). The meeting was a major milestone and extremely successful with an attendance of 350 people from 54 different countries. It included a day and a half of workshops and short courses followed by 3 days of platform presentations and posters. There were 200 platform presentations with 100 poster presentations. Dr Gary Rand conducted a half-day short course. In addition, Dr. Rand and Dr. Hoang presented a paper and chaired several sessions. According to Dr. Dang Vu Minh, Chairman for Science, Technology, and the Environment of the National Assembly of Viet Nam, this was the largest meeting ever held in Viet Nam. Along with other universities in the U.S., FIU is now organizing future research collaborations in Viet Nam, and will be interacting with government officials and scientists to foster training programs and short courses for Vietnamese graduate students. The second meeting is scheduled for 2012 in Hanoi.
