Biology professor awarded J. William Fulbright Fellowship

Alejandro Barbieri has been awarded the prestigious J. William Fulbright Fellowship for 2012-13 to visit the Universidad Mayor de San Simon in Bolivia. The Universidad Mayor de San Simon was founded in 1832 and currently has more than 80,000 students. It is located in Cochabamba with several campuses in other cities, including La Paz and San Cruz de la Sierra. During his visit, Alejandro will teach a graduate mini-course and will conduct a workshop in Molecular and Cell Biology in the Department of Biology as well as in the Center of Biotechnology. He will also conduct cell biology and phytochemical research examining the role of native plant extracts on the in vitro development of fat cells. This visit will help create the basis for the development of future collaborations and exchange of students between the Universidad Mayor de San Simon and FIU.
